Trying to cover five subjects in one long session feels efficient — you're "getting through" everything. What actually happens is that each subject gets a fraction of the mental capacity it needed, and very little of any of them makes it into long-term memory. That's not a discipline problem. It's a hardware limit.

1. Your working memory has a hard limit

Working memory — the mental space where you actively hold and manipulate information while thinking — can only hold a handful of items at once, commonly estimated around four, give or take. This isn't a matter of trying harder; it's a structural limit on how the brain processes information in the moment, the same way a computer only has so much RAM regardless of how important the task is.

Cognitive load is the term for how much of that limited capacity a given task is using. Learning something genuinely new and complex uses more of it than reviewing something familiar. The practical consequence: once load exceeds capacity, new information doesn't get processed into memory at all — it's not that it's remembered poorly, it's that it was never really encoded in the first place.

Working memory can hold roughly four items at once, regardless of how much willpower or focus you bring to it. Once a task demands more than that, new information stops being encoded — not stored poorly, just not stored.

2. The three kinds of cognitive load

Not all mental effort is the same kind of load, and knowing the difference changes what you should actually cut:

  • Intrinsic load — the load inherent to the material itself. Calculus is intrinsically harder than basic arithmetic no matter how it's taught; this load can be managed but not eliminated.
  • Extraneous load — load created by how information is presented, not by the material itself. A cluttered textbook page, confusing instructions, or unnecessary decorative content all add load that does nothing for learning and should be cut ruthlessly.
  • Germane load — the productive effort of actually building understanding: connecting new information to what you already know. This is the load you want to protect, since it's the part that actually produces learning.

The goal isn't to minimise all load — it's to strip out extraneous load so there's more room left for the germane load that's actually doing the work.

3. Why switching subjects mid-session costs more than it seems

Jumping from biology to history to math in one sitting feels like efficient multitasking, but each switch carries a real cost that rarely gets accounted for:

  • Every switch reloads context from scratch. Working memory doesn't carry biology's mental framework over to history — it has to clear and rebuild, which is itself a load-consuming action that eats into the capacity you have left for the new subject.
  • Interrupted material gets encoded worse. Leaving a topic mid-thought to switch to another uses up capacity holding the unfinished thread, which competes with actually processing the new subject.
  • The apparent time saved is often an illusion. Three 20-minute sessions across three subjects with real breaks between them typically beats one 60-minute session bouncing between all three, even though the total time is identical.

Switching subjects isn't free — each switch consumes working memory capacity just to reload context, on top of whatever the new subject itself demands. Fewer switches usually beats more coverage per hour.

4. How to cut load without cutting content

The goal is reducing extraneous and unnecessary load, not reducing how much you actually learn:

  • Study one subject per block, with a real break between subjects. A short break lets working memory clear before the next subject's context loads in, instead of the two blurring into each other.
  • Simplify the format before the content. Rewriting messy notes into a clean, organised version reduces extraneous load without cutting a single concept — the material gets easier to hold in mind, not easier in substance.
  • Chunk large amounts of information into smaller units. Breaking twelve vocabulary words into three groups of four respects working memory's real capacity instead of fighting it.
  • Remove decorative or irrelevant content from your study materials. Colour-coding for its own sake, unrelated images, or overly busy slides add load that competes with the material itself for the same limited space.
  • Build automaticity on basics before tackling complex problems. If retrieving basic facts still takes conscious effort, it eats into the capacity needed for the harder reasoning built on top of them — practising the basics until they're automatic frees up room for the actual complexity.

Cutting cognitive load means removing clutter, breaking content into smaller chunks, and separating subjects with real breaks — not covering less material. The goal is making room for the material, not skipping it.

5. Signs you've already overloaded, and what to do

  • You reread the same sentence without it registering. This is a classic sign that working memory has no spare capacity left to actually process what you're reading, not a sign you need to read it more times.
  • You can't explain what you just studied in your own words. If you can recognise it but can't restate it, it likely never made it past working memory into anything more durable.
  • Everything starts to blur together. When facts across different subjects start getting mixed up, it's often a sign too much was loaded in too short a window, not that you don't know the material.
  • What to do about it: stop, take a genuine break — even five minutes helps clear working memory — and resume with one subject at a time rather than trying to push through the overload.

Rereading without registering, blurring subjects together, and being unable to restate what you just studied are all signs of an overloaded working memory, not a sign you need to push harder. A real break, then one subject at a time, is the actual fix.
