Most students study one subject in a tidy block, finish it, then move to the next — math for an hour, then history for an hour. It feels organised and thorough. It's also, according to a large body of learning research, not the most effective way to actually retain what you're studying.
1. What interleaving actually is
Blocked practice is studying one topic completely before moving to the next: AAAA, then BBBB, then CCCC. Interleaving is mixing related topics or problem types together instead: ABCABCABC. Rather than ten algebra problems in a row, you'd work through algebra, geometry, and statistics problems in a shuffled order.
The key detail is that interleaving isn't about mixing unrelated things (algebra and history don't interleave usefully) — it's about mixing related material that's easy to confuse, so your brain has to actively figure out which approach applies each time, instead of running the same approach on autopilot.
Interleaving means mixing related topics or problem types together (ABCABC) instead of mastering one before moving to the next (AAABBBCCC) — the mixing has to be between related material for it to help.
2. Why it feels worse while it's working better
This is the part that trips most students up: interleaving consistently produces worse performance during practice and better performance on tests days or weeks later — the exact opposite of what blocked practice does.
When you drill the same problem type ten times in a row, you get faster and more confident with each repetition, because you already know which method to use — you're not really solving the problem anymore, you're executing a memorised procedure. That fluency feels like mastery, but it's partly an illusion: it disappears the moment the problem type changes, because you never practiced choosing the right approach, only executing it.
Interleaving forces that choice every single time, which is harder and slower in the moment — but it's precisely that extra difficulty that builds the skill exams actually test: recognising which method a problem calls for, not just executing a method you were told to use.
Interleaving feels harder and slower while you're doing it, and blocked practice feels smooth and confident — but that ease is often an illusion of fluency that evaporates once the problem type changes.
3. Why mixing subjects works
A few mechanisms explain why the harder-feeling method produces the better outcome:
- It trains discrimination, not just execution. Real tests rarely announce "this is a chapter 4 problem" — you have to first figure out what kind of problem it is. Interleaving is the only practice format that trains that first step.
- It resembles retrieval more than review. Switching between topics forces you to actually reconstruct the relevant method from memory each time, rather than keeping it loaded in working memory across a whole block of similar problems.
- It builds more durable, better-connected memories. The extra effort spent discriminating between approaches — sometimes called desirable difficulty — is uncomfortable in the moment but produces memories that survive longer and generalise better to new problems.
4. How to interleave without turning it into chaos
- Interleave within a domain, not across unrelated ones. Mix algebra/geometry/statistics, or grammar/vocabulary/reading comprehension — mixing things that are actually confusable is what builds discrimination skill; randomly alternating unrelated subjects just adds friction without the benefit.
- Learn the basics of each topic in blocks first. Interleaving works best once you have some initial familiarity with each topic — throwing complete beginners into a shuffled mix of things they've never seen adds confusion rather than useful difficulty.
- Shuffle practice problems, not just topics. If you have a problem set, don't do it in the order it's printed — mix question types so you can't predict what's coming next from what came before.
- Expect it to feel less confident. If interleaved practice feels smooth and easy, you're probably not mixing similar-enough material — some friction is a sign it's working, not a sign you should switch back to blocking.
Interleave material that's genuinely similar enough to confuse, after you have some basic familiarity with each part — random unrelated mixing or interleaving total beginners undermines the benefit rather than adding to it.
5. When blocked practice is still the right call
Interleaving isn't the right tool for every moment of learning:
- When you're encountering something for the very first time. You need some initial blocked repetition to build a foothold before mixing helps — interleaving a topic you've never seen just produces confusion, not desirable difficulty.
- When you're building raw fluency on a single, narrow skill (memorising a specific formula, a vocabulary list, a set of dates) — repetition of the same thing has real value there, separate from discrimination skill.
- Right before a very specific, narrow test on one topic only, some blocked review to sharpen that one area can still be a reasonable use of your last hour.
The realistic goal isn't to interleave everything all the time — it's to use blocked practice for initial learning and raw repetition, then shift toward interleaving as your main review method once you have some grounding in each topic.
Block first to build a foothold on new material, then interleave to build the discrimination skill that exams actually test. Neither method alone covers the whole job.
